Coyote hunting is fun and there are many different ways to hunt coyotes. Coyote hunting tactics will vary from one hunter to another, but only insofar as slight variations of the different techniques. So if you are a beginner or a more experienced hunter here are some techniques which will help you to save a lot of wasted time and effort. Some of these hunting tactics are specifically designed for the coyote to take advantage of some of its natural traits, other tips can be used as hunting tactics for many different animals.

The first hunting tactic, and I believe the most fun to use, is to try and call them to you. This involves imitating the coyote in order to lure him out of his den or hiding place. The calls should imitate female mating calls, male aggressive territorial calls, danger calls, etc, essentially this is where the coyotes are talking to each other and you are trying to get any coyote that is close by to think that you are also a coyote. The calls can also imitate injured or dying animals. Learning how to do these calls is a relatively simple task. You can purchase many different types of callers, either mouth blown or electronic blown. You can also buy CDs or MP3s with the sounds of real animals in distress. Using these, you can practice your own calls, trying to perfect them as you go. If you can convince the coyote that you are an animal in distress this is all that matters. A coyote will find it very hard to resist these sounds.

But before you can call the coyotes out, you first must scout the location, set yourself up, and make sure that there are coyotes in the location, there’s no point wasting your time in an area in which there are no coyotes. Scouting means searching for any coyote tracks and droppings that will show signs of recent coyote activity. If there are regular sightings of coyotes in an area, you should scout in that area first. Ask the landowners, they will not only give you as much help as possible because of the threat that the coyote means to his livestock, they are also in the best position for telling you about any signs of coyote activity because they will know their own land. If there is plenty of coyote food in the area, rabbits, deer, mice, etc, you are sure to find coyotes for hunting.

Now you have to get yourself set up. Where you place yourself for calling is absolutely vital to a good hunt. Make sure that you are downwind because the coyote has a terrific sense of smell. Sometimes the coyote will circle around so you should have a partner with you who can scan specifically for this. Make sure the sun is at your back as well, this will make it much more difficult for the coyote to see you. If you can position yourself in the shade of trees or bushes, and you are wearing camouflage gear, you should be in a prime position. The main thing is the wind, if this is not blowing in the right direction you should call off the hunt.

By keeping these coyote hunting tips in mind you will stand a much better chance of having a successful hunt.

The use of coyote hunting dogs is only a relatively recent trend. The domesticated dog has a knack of attracting the coyote, or indeed other wild dogs, and luring them back to the Hunter. Hunting dogs have been bred over the years to achieve various skills. There are dogs that are bred for visible acuity and speed, others are bred primarily for scent. Others, such as retrievers, are bred to be able to work under the sound of gunfire, follow the specific commands of the Hunter, and as their name suggests retrieve the downed prey. Which are the best breeds for the use in coyote hunting? Following are three examples of coyote huntings best breeds.

The Walker hound is descended from the English foxhound. They are between 20 and 28 inches tall at the shoulder blades and weigh approximately 50 to 70 pounds. They are well tempered and, like most hounds, are very difficult to bring into aggression. They are an extremely intelligent dog but can be oblivious to any commands while trailing a scent. When you are searching out one of these hounds, make sure they come from a long line of outstanding hunters who have been specifically bred to track down and kill coyotes. These Walker Coyote hounds can be excellent cold trailers, even on snow.

Greyhounds are one of the best hunting dogs for coyote. This is because of the pure natural speed that they possess. Hunting in packs, these dogs can chase down the coyote at almost 50 miles an hour, and in some cases a single heavy greyhounds can catch and finish off the coyote before the rest of the pack arrives. This breed is also very gentle and can become very attached to their masters. A male can reach the hate of about 28 inches and can weigh up to 75 pounds. The light muscular build of a greyhound, is the key to its speed, and it has the largest heart of any breed. These dogs are sprinters, but they are often referred to as the “45 mile per hour couch potatoes”

Another breed for coyote hunting is the staghound. The American staghound is mostly used for hunting stag, but they show massive hunting capabilities when it comes to the coyote. This dog can reach a height of 30 inches and a weight of over 100 pounds. It is a mix between a Scottish deer hound and a greyhound. They have been bred for one purpose … hunting. They will instinctively go after something that moves, but particularly an animal which will fight back, such as the coyote. They have often been used in the past for hunting wolves and bobcats. But, they are not great trailers, they tend to follow only on sight. However, if they are in a pack with good scent dogs they will follow along with the others. It is not uncommon for a staghound pup which has been raised with trail hounds to learn the ability to of tracking a coyote with as much passion as any other hound.

These are three of the best coyote hunters. Others include the Blackmouth Cur and the Rhodesian Ridgeback. When hunting for coyotes, it is much better to have your dogs as large as possible, and it is best to have three or four dogs in the pack. It takes a strong breed to stand up to the requirements of being an effective coyote hunting dog.

Calling coyotes and coyote hunting is a fantastic sport which is enjoyed by many hunters. Heading out in the early morning, scouting a potential coyote hunting area, setting yourself in place, initiating calling sequences, and finally seeing that coyote coming towards you searching for its next dinner, is very difficult to beat. Fortunately, we have plenty of good technology these days so that we are able to watch and re-watch the action on coyote hunting videos. Not only can these videos of coyote hunting teach you how to become a better coyote Hunter, they will also show you incredible footage of tactics and techniques used in coyote hunting, and they will show up some of the intelligence of the coyote.

Videos of people hunting coyotes are not to everyone’s taste and are mainly intended to be viewed by people who like watching videos about hunting coyotes and those who have a passion for hunting coyotes. There are some fantastic resources on the Internet where you will find coyote hunting videos. One of them is YouTube, where if you type in the search “coyote hunting” you will come up with about 3813 results. Many of these videos will show a hunt in progress, allowing the viewer to see exactly what it takes to stalk and take out a coyote. Some of the videos actually go through the process of calling, not only telling you about the natural communication between coyotes, but teaching you the different distress calls which are made by an animal which has been injured and is dying. There are also plenty of coyote hunting YouTube videos which show you how to hunt coyote with dogs, what types of dogs you should work with, and how to train a pack of dogs to hunt coyotes.

Then there are plenty of hunting videos and coyote hunting DVDs which you can purchase. These videos are from people like Byron South, who is a master when it comes to Coyote calling videos. Not only are his videos spectacular, Byron will also give you tips on how to become more proficient as a coyote Hunter. Byron South’s coyote hunting DVDs will educate you about rifle selection, how to scout an area properly before a coyote hunt, how to set yourself up properly to give yourself the best advantage during a coyote call, tips and tricks that you can go back to again and again to sharpen your own techniques.

There are many other excellent hunters who have released their own coyote hunting videos. Some of the productions are very impressive and some of these hunters can be very candid whilst still keeping up a professional look. Quite a few of these hunting coyote videos that have been professionally done, are of excellent quality, clearly showing you what needs to be done. If you are serious about upgrading your own coyote hunting abilities, or if you just want to compare your hunting style with the hunting styles of some of the best coyote hunters and callers around, then you really need to buy coyote hunting videos. Most of them are reasonably priced for the value that they pack.

A coyote knows the sound of a dying rabbit because they hear it time after time when they are feeding. The coyote always rushes into the spot where he is the sound of an injured or a dying animal. This is one of the types of coyote calls that a hunter can use to his advantage. It is the habit of the coyote that will lure him out when the hunter mimics this sound. The techniques are not very difficult to learn, all you need are persistence and patience. Think about fishing, when you cast out your line you have no idea if you are going to catch a fish or not, sometimes you do, and sometimes you don’t. You need to have a certain amount of patience and persistence for you to have the willingness to cast your fishing line out the next time, and the time after that, until you have finally succeeded and caught that fish. This is exactly the same as coyote calling.

There are three different types of coyote calls. The first one is the electronic call. These electronic callers are very useful. Most of these types of coyote callers use recorded animal voices in distress which the hunter can use to trick the coyote with. These electronic types of coyote callers have many advantages. They allow you to shoot instead of calling, they are very easy to use, there is normally a very wide range of animal distress sounds which can be stored on each device, and they are capable of being used to call other species. But, there are disadvantages also to these electronic types of coyote calls. If you run out of batteries you will do no more calling for the day. Some of them are very bulky, if you don’t get a good quality collar and they can end up producing sound quality which is not very good.

Then there are two types of mouth calls. The open reed call and the closed reed call. Of course, there are disadvantages and advantages to using the mouth type coyote call. Some of the major disadvantages include the need for movement in order to use it, you have to blow through it, there is an element of skill involved, most callers are limited to producing one sound, and they can stop working completely in freezing weather. The advantages are that they are much easier to control the volume, they are a lot easier in controlling the frequency, they are much easier to carry in the pocket, they are much easier to control the emotional pitch, and they are much less expensive than their electronic counterparts.

You must understand that there are some coyotes who will not respond to the calls. Much of this may be due to the coyote having escaped from a call previously. In a world of coyote hunting, you have to be prepared for the coyote not responding in the way that you want it to respond. When you have figured out the type of coyote call that works to you, stick to it because it will probably work again in the future.

Before you can become serious about coyote hunting, you have to get serious about understanding your prey. Coyotes, as a species, are very adaptable, and they can pretty much survive in all sorts of environments including suburban and urban settings. Humans have persecuted the coyote and yet it still expands its territory. The urban environment offers the coyote abundant supplies of water, food, and shelter.

Before we go into the coyote behavior, it will help to know something about the animal itself. The coyote is from the same family as the dog, the red fox, the wolf, the grey fox, and the swift fox. It can weigh over 50 pounds, with a top height of about 15 or 16 inches. The male is always slightly bigger than the female. The coyote will protect his living area from other coyotes and other species including dogs and cats. This natural coyote behavior does not show the coyote to be overly aggressive. Although the coyote is a predator, it is also an opportunistic feeder. So part from eating mice, squirrels, raccoons, ducks, and domestic pets, it will also eat vegetables and fruit.

The best-known trait of the coyote is its howling and yelping cry, which is often done in a series of ear piercing, high-pitched bayings. It will also growl, bark, squeal, and wail. Coyotes are especially vocal at dusk and dawn and are usually very silent during the daytime. There can be quite a racket if there is more than one coyote in the area. One coyotes loud howling will set off another coyote, and so forth, until there is a cacophony of sound. Coyotes communicate with their cries and yelps. Some sounds may be aggressiveness towards another coyote that is invading its territory. Other sounds may signify a female coyote in heat, there will also make different sounds when they are at play.

One of the most unique characteristics of the coyote is its well-developed hearing and smell. Hunters are always advised to make themselves as odorless as possible and to always try and set themselves up downwind of the coyote when they are hunting. Another coyote behavior which is fairly impressive is the stamina and speed at which it can run. At full tilt, the coyote can reach speeds of up to 35 mph. Even Greyhounds will take a long time to catch a coyote at full speed.

The coyote behavior has flaws which open it up and allow the hunter to get an edge. One of these flaws is that it can be called out. The hunter will use imitation calls to either simulate another coyote invading its territory, or an animal which is injured and dying. Another flaw is the coyotes ability to sleep very deeply. This will allow the hunter to approach very closely before waking, if it is done as quietly then the hunter has the edge. Another weakness is constantly turning its head to look back when it is being pursued. When a coyote is shot at it will flee for a certain length of time, then it will inexplicably stop to try and measure the distance between itself and the pursuer. Although this is unusual behavior,

There is a real thrill in heading out to the wilderness in search of the chase. How to hunt coyotes is not very difficult if you have the correct mindset, some good techniques, a steady hand, and a bit of good fortune. The coyote is an exceptional animal. It is very intelligent so you will find it very difficult to outwit him. Hunting for coyotes takes stamina, patience, and skill, but if done properly it can offer you one of the richest thrills that you will ever get.

Before you even think about how to hunt a coyote, you have two make sure that you have the right equipment. So, your equipment list is obviously going to start with the type of rifle you are going to hunt with. Now, the coyote is not a huge animal, so unless you want to completely destroy any trace that the coyote was ever in front of you, you don’t really need to use a large caliber rifle. Having said that, what is the best caliber of rifle to use for coyote hunting?

Most coyote hunters will not use anything larger than a 223 caliber rifle. This will take down any animal in the size range of a coyote without destroying its pelt. Another factor that you have to decide upon is the size of rifle scope that you’re going to use. Most coyote hunting will require that you are within about 100 – 200 yards of the prey, so your telescopic sight does not need to be of exceptional quality. And, when it comes to bullets, these should rapidly disintegrate when they impact, a hunting grade hollow point will usually do the trick. This will eliminate ricochets and minimize pelt damage. Once you have your rifle, you should purchase some camouflage clothing which will blend into the environment where you intend hunting. This is also very important because if the coyote spots you and recognizes you as a human being, he will take off into the sunset and you will never see him again. Oh, and never wear anything that gives you an odor, coyotes noses are very sensitive and they will spot you from a good distance away, actually before they can even see you.

You have all your equipment and youre heading out on the coyote hunt. You need to select your setting very carefully. First, scout the area looking for any signs of coyote activity. This will maybe show up as coyote footprints or coyote droppings. Once you have established that there are animals in the vicinity, you can set yourself up. Make sure first of all that you are downwind of the coyote, again this is trying to deal with that coyote sense of smell. Setting yourself up with the wind coming directly at you or even better as a crosswind, is the most advantageous for you.

You can now use the various calling techniques and calls that we will discuss in a future article to try and entice the animal from its den and into the open. Train yourself to keep low and quiet at all times. There is nothing as disappointing as waiting for hours on end for the coyote to show up, only to scare him away at the last moment with a sudden movement.

Coyotes are found in abundance throughout the continental United States, Canada, and as far south as Panama. Related to the Gray Wolf, the coyote is a really adaptable animal, which for the most part this is a response to human encroachments on its territory. This is one of the things that make a challenge of coyote hunting. Coyotes have adapted to human behavior, some even venturing into and surviving in suburban and urban landscapes. In some areas, coyote attacks on humans have been on the increase. So what are the real challenges for the hunter?

This is a really fun sport and most people will find that the coyote hunting element is far better than the actual coyote killing element. The first major challenge for the coyote hunter is to know his prey. This is easier said than done because of the coyotes adaptability. You must understand some of the psychology of the Coyote, what makes it tick. You have to be able to read the environment as a coyote would, and you must be able to use your own intelligence in order to outwit such a clever animal.

Coyotes have very special talents, and none more so than their sense of smell. The coyote’s sense of smell is highly developed and is used very effectively when it is hunting its prey or seeking out carrion. It is also used to detect the scent trails of other coyotes, used to mark out territorial areas. So the hunter would be well advised to try and make themselves as odorless as possible. You should also be careful to position yourself downwind of your prey at all times. This will lessen the chances of the coyote becoming aware of your presence.

Your weapon choice is another important factor. Light calibers are the regular choice of most small-time hunter’s, all you’re going to need most of the time is a 22 magnum. A lot of your shots are going to be taken at around 100 yards so you won’t require an overly priced telescopic sight. This type of rifle will allow you to shoot well, have plenty of power, and still be able to hold your control. If you are hunting to sell the coyote pelts, a larger rifle will almost certainly ruin the hide.

To improve your chances of remaining unspotted by the coyote for as long as possible, you should choose your camouflage pattern wisely. Think about what you are doing; get the camouflage gear which will blend in to your surroundings. However, no matter how well camouflaged you think you are, you must at all times be aware of your movements. Try to stay as close to trees or shrubbery as you can.

Coyote calling is a great way to take advantage of the predatory habits of this animal. The coyote will always zero in on the sounds that its prey makes when it is injured or dying. Your task is to imitate the sounds as closely as possible. It isn’t hard to learn, and once you master a few simple techniques you will find that your chances of bagging a coyote will increase dramatically.

In future articles we will go into more depth about the actual hunt and how best to improve your results but, for now, hopefully we have been able to whet your appetite and leave you wanting a bit more so you can actually discover the fun of coyote hunting for real one day.
